Sea kayaks at Newbiggin

On Sunday the sea conditions were fine for kayaking but the tides were not great at Amble. It gets a bit muddy putting in at Shorebase at low tide. So the group went to Newbiggin-by-the-Sea for a change. There’s a lot of sand there at low tide but that’s better than mud.

Some tough sea paddling

Last Sunday the sea group consisted of experienced paddlers with several leaders in the group and they decided that the level of competence was sufficient to paddle out to Coquet Island even though there was a bit of an off-shore wind. They didn’t go round the island, just went out there and back. It meant … Read more

Excitement by the Hermitage

Most Sundays there’s an opportunity for a gentle paddle in the estuary – up through Warkworth and past the Hermitage if the tide is right. Last Sunday there was the added excitement of watching a young seal chasing fish and later eating one beside the Hermitage landing. Sadly none of us managed to get a … Read more

Dolphins at Amble

A hardy group went round the island on Sunday in 5 degrees, calm conditions and sunshine. They encountered quite a big pod of dolphins – but not great luck with photographing them although there is a video on Facebook here https://www.facebook.com/100080977505871/videos/pcb.10161099315887406/567702222773638

A bouncy trip round Coquet Island

The weather forecast wasn’t that good but the sea kayakers found that it was very calm at the start of their outing and decided to go for a trip round the island. Getting round the back was a challenge with some cracking waves as the swell was over a metre. Once they got to the … Read more

Aspiring leaders’ rescue practice

Last Sunday was a lovely day with no wind at all but the 1.8m swell outside Amble harbour made going out to sea impossible. Members of Coquet and Tynemouth clubs got together to practice rescues in the wave basin so that the potential leaders going in for an assessment could sharpen their skills. There aren’t … Read more

Tyne tour

The first weekend of November is traditionally when the Hexham club organises its Tyne Tour to celebrate the start of the river running season. The Coquet club organises the car parking at Wark sports club and then does a river run from Wark to Barrasford. It was a good session for novice and out-of-practice river … Read more

Friendly seals and rescue practice

Sunday’s sea kayak outing was to Coquet Island on a fairly calm day with an offshore wind. The seals were being as friendly as they always are at Coquet Island – even though we gave them plenty of room because they are pupping now. Conditions were pretty flat outside the harbour but got more interesting … Read more

Canoes on the Teviot

There are regular club trips with open canoes although not many of them get a mention on here. This was a small group on the Teviot ‘the perfect beginner river’ according to John Marshall. Photos Steve Cooper.
