Easy Going on Ulswater

Septembers camping weekend was a chance to use a selection of boat types on easy flat water. A leisurely paddle to Howtown tea room for coffee and cake, punctuated by stops for the dog who couldn’t decide between canoes, swimming or running on the bank. The return had John, our organiser, convert the canoes to … Read more

GPS Plotting of Recent Sea Routes

Two days on the sea last week made interesting plots showing we get to see much more than the tourist trips out from St. Abbs and Seahouses. The St. Abbs trip the plot shows just how many rock formations we navigated there and back. Plenty of maneuvering practice and what sea kayakers call ‘rock hopping’. … Read more

Open Canoe fun

There’s been more open canoe activity this summer than the club has had in recent years because we have more open canoe coaches and leaders now. Sea kayaks at Newbiggin

On Sunday the sea conditions were fine for kayaking but the tides were not great at Amble. It gets a bit muddy putting in at Shorebase at low tide. So the group went to Newbiggin-by-the-Sea for a change. There’s a lot of sand there at low tide but that’s better than mud.

Some tough sea paddling

Last Sunday the sea group consisted of experienced paddlers with several leaders in the group and they decided that the level of competence was sufficient to paddle out to Coquet Island even though there was a bit of an off-shore wind. They didn’t go round the island, just went out there and back. It meant … Read more
